Introduction to Pottery Wheel allows students to learn about the various steps in the pottery making process. Students will not create a finished piece but will have practiced the techniques for future pottery wheel classes.
We’ll touch on:
· Discuss how ceramics, pottery, sculpture and handbuilding are related and the different tools used for each.
· Different clay types
· The steps of creating pots using the wheel including form, trimming, firing and finishing a piece
· How to wedge clay
· Practical wheel exercises focused on centering and form building, opening and pulling walls.

Time: 2 hours

Pottery Wheel Basics class is a 4-session class that allows students to learn about the various steps in the pottery making process. Students often create 2-3 finished pieces by the end of the 4th week and will have practiced the techniques for future pottery wheel classes.
Class 1:
· Discuss how ceramics, pottery, sculpture and handbuilding are related and the different tools used for each.
· Different clay types
· The steps of creating pots using the wheel including form, trimming, firing and finishing a piece
· How to wedge clay
· Practical wheel exercises focused on throwing on the wheel including centering and form building, opening and pulling walls.
- Pots will dry and get ready for bisque firing
Class 2: Continuation of throwing on the wheel
· Students will continue to throw with the intent of having 2-3 pieces to take to the next steps.
· If a pieces was finished in Class 1, student will learn trimming techniques.
- Pots will dry and get ready for bisque firing or if already fired, continue to glazing steps.
Class 3: Trimming, altering form
· Students will learn various trim techniques using a variety of tools.
· If time allows, students can continue practice throwing.
- Pots will dry and get ready for bisque firing or if already fired, continue to glazing steps.
Class 4: Glazing and finishing pots
· Students will learn various glazing techniques and finish the pieces that are ready.
- Pots will be fired to finish and ready for pick up during store hours.
Course includes: use of studio tools, 15 lbs of clay, use of glazes, bisque and glaze firing in our electric kilns.
Cost: $180
Time: 2 hours per class (4 classes)

Students will have four 2-hour sessions to learn beyond the basics. Students should already be comfortable with centering and basic form.
Students will make 3-6 pieces throughout these classes.
Course includes: use of studio tools, 25 lbs of clay, use of glazes, bisque and glaze firing in our electric kilns.
Cost: $200
Time: 2 hours per class (4 classes)
